The New York Times | New York Region | McGreevey Describes 'Intensely Personal Decision' in Speech
Lord. What truly excellent timing.
You know what--this is exactly what we can expect as it is. When talented people are forced to tell lies to protect their futures, we can expect to see a lot of liars at the top. It's exactly this situation that results from secrecy and shame, and while it hasn't happened in quite so prominent a place before (at least in terms of homosexuality; I seem to remember someone else in power being forced to answer damaging questions irrelevant to his work), it's happened countless times.
But just why did it have to happen to a Democrat right now? That's a good week of weird gay press.

(CNN) -- Dropping a political bombshell, New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey announced his resignation Thursday after revealing that he is gay and that he had an adulterous affair with a man. via/more Glittering, BoiFromTroy, DiscountBlogger, esoterically.ne... Read More

By placing a paramour on the public payroll the sniveling McGreevey should not be lionized as a talented person forced to tell lies to protect his future.
If McGreevey like Clinton had behaved discretely and maturely while engaging in extra martial affairs there would not have been a firestorm. Guliani fell in love with another woman, got divorced, remarried and is considered presidential material.
Marrying his SECOND wife A YEAR before the gubernatorial election when he was in his 40s can be seen as a craven attempt by McGreevey pass for straight. Ed Koch campaigned with Bess Myserson while holding hands in 1977 but he didn't get married.
Crookedness and not the practicality of concealing one's homosexuality for advancement in society is the issue here.
Quite right -- I didn't mean to imply that there was anything less-than-sleazy about the gov's abuse of his power to keep his man happy. (Unless this has been a longstanding blackmail thing, which would make him look more victimized...and less competent to lead.)
But was he forced to tell lies? Yes, he was. And while I think people should be held accountable for their lies, I don't think they should be held accountable for a system that punishes them for truths that are really innocuous, trivially bad or not their fault. Appalling as it is that he used public funds to facilitate his hook-ups, it likely would never have happened if they hadn't been so difficult to discreetly arrange.
And as far as we know, Koch is completely sexless. Which is good, because I shudder at the thought of him having little demon-spawn running around.
I just shudder at the thought of Ed Koch having sex.
*shudder*
