Sarah Vowell made me cry tonight.

Consider this: The reason it's refreshing is that Sarah cares about something, whereas Maureen has made a career of glib cynicsm. She scored a couple of famously penetrating one-liners during the Clinton years -- which were cheap shots, really, since it's easy to be glib when we're not under attack and mired in the wrong war -- but she spent most of the last five years trying to find the same sarcasm in terrorism, religious fanaticism and corruption as she did in not inhaling and Monica Leinsky. And not only was it not funny, it was toxic and self-defeating.
