The Week That Was
This has been an oddly calm few days. Unsettling, even. I've been at home but without my own computer to use to stay on top of things--to stretch a metaphor, it's a little like losing your sight. I'm suddenly helpless and desperate for human contact or little scraps of information. Every e-mail I get feels like a letter sent to the front lines of combat, and a few minutes of instant messaging are like the taps of Morse code to the survivors of a plane downed in the Andes. I'm not going to be so blithe about the value of the internet anymore, let me tell you.
Some highlights of the weekend:
*Watching in amused wonder as two moderately cute couples made out intensely, side by side, none of them ordering anything from the less-amused bartender.
*Watching sullenly as the cute guy bouncing around the bar all night ended up picking the one bonafide loser among the many boys vying for his attention. But then cheering up when, on his exit, he chose to say something immensely rude to the bartender. Maybe she won't let either of them come back.
*Getting the invitation to Julie's wedding. January outside of Philly. Hrm. Not sure if I can go if I can't split the expense with someone else (since it's a very small shindig and I may not know any of the other guests).
*Thanksgiving dinner with my sister's potential in-laws. Ex-hippie types (I'm thinking of the coolest parents among my friends) and rather lovely people. People who live outside Philly. People whose other son is getting married the same night that Julie is. And having a dry reception. Now, there are lots of weddings every day of the year...but just try and tell me that that's not a sign.
*Thinking about
rosefox (whom I have not seen in many years) as I was sadly bringing my computer into TekServe (where she once worked), and promptly running smack into her at the sales counter. I don't know what that might be a sign of, but I'll gladly take it as one. She promptly killed off half my stomach butterflies by confirming that I was entitled to a free drive replacement under AppleCare, and would get it as soon as they scanned my serial number even if I couldn't find a receipt. I still love that girl, whose powers seem to transcend time and space. All my best to her and her family during these troubled times.
*Hearing about a possible apartment opening up in Hell's Kitchen very soon--convenient, modern and relatively affordable, and potentially mine if I just jump at it and commit to moving there. This is the kind of news I dread, because when it's as easy as it's ever going to be, there's really no excuse if I don't make it happen. Still, we'll see.
