'Most severely wounded' soldier endures: blind, quadriplegic, struggling to breathe - International Herald Tribune

TAMPA, Florida: He lies flat, unseeing eyes fixed on the ceiling, tubes and machines feeding him, breathing for him, keeping him alive. He cannot walk or talk, but he can grimace and cry. And he is fully aware of what has happened to him.

I don't know that I've ever read a sadder war story. The saddest part, if there can be such a thing, is that the parents simply must know that their son is praying daily for death to take him. What else is there for him to do?
