Eye Anxiety

A brief demonstration of the quality of the stock I come from:

Yesterday morning my mom had a sudden retinal detachment. She was ready for this possibility--she's had a history of eye problems and has always been instructed to be alert for the warning signs, and made arrangements to see her ophthalmologist within hours. He had her prepared for surgery by the early evening and she was home and resting comfortably by bedtime. Textbook surgery--complete recovery with no loss of vision expected, though she's going to be on bed rest for a week and functionally blind in that eye for a few weeks while the eye is pressurized to heal.

What makes my mom a rockstar, though? She was away for the weekend when she got the first cloud across her field of vision, and the best surgeons are in Manhattan, so she drove herself back into the city. Hardcore, man.
