MAC Attack
Utterly fascinating Mac/TiVo/Leopard/firewall/router question after the break, for the interested. (I'll spare the rest of you.)
So I've essentially been using my iMac as a router for my TiVo: running an ethernet cable to a cheap switch, and running a line from that to the TiVo. The alternatives are (a) buying an expensive wireless adapter for the TiVo, or (b) running a line from the router in the living room.
It's worked brilliantly, but Leopard mucked things up--apparently the firewall changes prevent the TiVo from being able to see the network through the iMac, and none of the software or hardware configurations I've tried has worked. (Well, one--running a line to the router every time it tells me the program information is running low.)
Any thoughts on what I can do to share this connection again? I really don't want to plunk down money to get the TiVo directly onto the wireless network, because it absolutely does not need a dedicated connection for the sake of its brief and infrequent regular downloads. But I'm kind of stumped, not being much of a networking tech.

Mike,
Why do you say a wireless adapter is expensive? Amazon has several (mostly used) under $50 -- that seems not-bad to me, although I'm surprised there aren't a bunch in the $20 range.

On the other hand, Internet Sharing is really supposed to work. Can you be more specific about what's wrong?
Well, yeah, I could get one more dongle and make it work. But I have many better uses for 20-50 bucks, and I don't relish the idea of pulling out the box and digging around for the port given how complicated the back of my desk/entertainment center already is.
Not sure how to explain the situation more clearly, since networking is not my thing. The specific error I get is that the TiVo reports no DHCP server, and the iMac can't see it on the network for TiVo ToGo. Oddly, TiVo can see the iMac to get music and photos, so it's clearly an issue of network access being blocked. But I've turned on Internet Sharing and set the firewall as low on security as it goes, so I don't see what's left.
